Italy: Suspected mafia thugs ‘threaten to decapitate Sicilian senator’

Thugs in the Sicilian capital, Palermo on Monday threatened to decapitate conservative Italian senator Carlo Vizzini and an anti-mafia campaigner who he works with.

Thugs in the Sicilian capital, Palermo on Monday threatened to decapitate conservative Italian senator Carlo Vizzini and an anti-mafia campaigner who he works with.

“You police stooge, we’ll rip your head off and that piece of shit Vizzini’s,” the thugs told Vito Onesti, as he was jogging in a Palermo park. The thugs were riding a motorbike and their faces were concealed by crash-helmets.

Vizzini, who has received previous threats, told Andkronos he was “upset” Vizzini had been targeted. But he said he, Onesti and others would continue to campaign against the Sicilian mafia’s extortion racket in its Palermo strongholds and elsehwere.

“These people need to understand we’re not going to go away and and will keep going until all mafia members are poor and in jail,” Vizzini said.

Onesti, a retired policeman, volunteers for the anti-racket association MafiaContro.

The threats drew condemnation from Italian politicians, including justice minister Angelino Alfano, and the mayor of Palermo, Diego Cammarata.

“Such cowardly acts of intimidation will have no effect whatsoever on our commitment to fighting the mafia,” said Alfano.
Cammarata expressed his complete solidarity with Vizzini and Onesti.

“These vile and unnacceptable gestures show that the action being taken to fight the mafia is hitting home and needs to continue. It has the full support of the city council and citizens of Palermo,” he said.
